Showtime is making another ambitious attempt to revive the Dexter phenomenon with a brand new prequel series titled Original Sin, and they’ve just dropped the first trailer.
Although Dexter wrapped up over ten years ago, we’re in an era that thrives on reboots and nostalgic IPs, so it’s no surprise there’s a push to bring the beloved series back into the spotlight. In 2022, fans were treated to Dexter: New Blood, which took place a decade after the original series’ events. Now, in an intriguing twist, Paramount and Showtime have unveiled the trailer for a prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. Before diving into the trailer and further details, be aware there are spoilers regarding New Blood’s conclusion. You’ve been warned!
In the trailer, viewers catch a glimpse of a pivotal moment from the end of New Blood: Dexter, sprawled in the snow, bleeding from a gunshot wound inflicted by his son, Harrison. As hospital staff work to save him, we’re transported back to his past, setting the stage for the prequel. “Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin tracks Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) as he evolves from a student into a vigilante serial killer,” the official synopsis reveals. “As his darker instincts surface, Dexter learns to harness them with increasingly dangerous consequences.”
The series introduces us to Dexter’s early partnership with his father, Harry (portrayed by Christian Slater), who instills in him a Code—guidelines to help him target those he deems worthy of elimination while staying out of the authorities’ sights. Juggling this morality with his forensics internship at Miami Metro Police poses quite the challenge for young Dexter.
Fans will also be pleased to hear that Michael C. Hall returns to lend his voice to Dexter’s narrative journey, and there’s a special guest appearance by none other than Buffy’s own Sarah Michelle Gellar. Even though the prequel nature of the series suggests Dexter survives these youthful escapades, there’s still plenty of excitement to anticipate.
Moreover, the series might even address lingering questions from New Blood’s finale, as a subsequent sequel, Dexter: Resurrection, is in the works. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for the prequel to wrap with Dexter miraculously surviving, stirring anticipation until the series debut on December 13 on Paramount+.
