Update (27/11): 2K Games has officially acknowledged the result of the recent vote concerning the motion capture team’s unionization in California, expressing their respect for the decision.
In their statement, they mentioned, “On November 22, 2024, a ballot was conducted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to decide if the eligible employees at the 2K Petaluma Mocap Studio would join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). The ballots have been tallied, and it appears that the majority have chosen to unionize with IATSE. We value the verdict of our team and are grateful for everyone’s participation in this election. As we proceed, our primary focus remains on delivering top-notch and immersive gaming experiences to enthusiasts across the globe.”
Original story (25/11): The employees at 2K Games’ motion-capture studio in California have made the decision to unionize.
According to a post on the IATSE website, 15 members supported the decision, while six opposed it during the vote held on Friday, November 22nd. This election was overseen by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
Matthew Peterson, a 2K mocap animator, commented on the development, saying, “Today’s outcome shows that those at this studio aspire for the best not just for themselves, but for their colleagues, future generations, and the studio at large. Despite the hurdles faced during this campaign, it’s heartening to see empathy as the main driver of this initiative.”
He further expressed, “I anticipate engaging in sincere negotiations with Take-Two and hope that our actions can inspire others in the gaming industry to organize and secure the essential protections needed not just to survive, but to flourish.”
Adding to this, IATSE’s International President, Matthew Loeb, remarked, “This triumph extends beyond a single studio; it reflects on the prospective work environment within the gaming sector. The 2K MoCap team has demonstrated what many in the entertainment field already understand—that collective action is vital for ensuring fairness, equity, and respect at work. Their bravery is likely to motivate others to follow their lead. This outcome underscores the power of workers exercising their organizational rights, a principle we are committed to defending and expanding.”
In October, 2K’s California mocap studio took the initial step to unionize.
