In a recent announcement, Meta revealed at their September Connect event that they’re teaming up with Microsoft to enable Windows 11 PCs to effortlessly pair with Quest headsets without the need for wires. Now, the companies have confirmed that we’ll see a preview of this feature rolling out in December.
This upcoming feature is set to allow the Quest 3 and Quest 3S to link up with Windows 11 PCs, offering a multi-monitor work setup. If you’re familiar with Apple’s Vision Pro connecting to Mac via Mac Virtual Display, introduced in February 2024, this development will seem quite similar.
Microsoft is gearing up to release this feature in a public preview sometime in December. The hope is that this will strike a chord with users wanting to boost their productivity in a mixed reality environment.
“Bringing Windows into mixed reality introduces the full breadth of Windows 11 features to headsets like the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Connecting to either your local Windows machine or a Windows 365 Cloud PC with a Quest headset is smooth and quick, creating a high-quality, private multi-monitor setup in seconds,” stated Melissa Grant, Senior Director of Product Marketing for Microsoft 365, on their blog.
Back at the September unveil at Connect, Meta hinted at how intuitive this connection could be—you could simply glance at your keyboard to immediately engage with your PC and start manipulating windows across multiple virtual screens. This marks a significant shift from the current Remote Desktop model available with Meta’s Air Link.
Although Quest is predominantly known as a leading standalone VR gaming console, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, believes enhancing Windows integration marks significant progress for the Quest platform.
“This is an essential move toward establishing a general computing platform,” Zuckerberg noted. “It’s about more than just games, even though Quest excels there. You’ll be using it for apps, watching videos, and performing all the tasks you’d expect from a general-purpose computer. Quest really does it all.”
