Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer Teases Unexpected Pokemon Reference, Sparking Imaginations of a Crossover

Today, Paramount and Sega unveiled a new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and to everyone’s surprise, it includes a nod to Pokemon.

It’s been a few months since we got our first glimpse of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and with the film set to hit theaters in just about a month, anticipation has been high among fans waiting for a new sneak peek. Well, if that sounds like you, today’s your lucky day! Paramount just released the second official trailer for this much-anticipated sequel, and it’s packed with surprises. One particularly amusing moment features a kid asking if Tails is Detective Pikachu. Firstly, yes, they can totally do that. Secondly, it completely caught me off guard—in the best way possible! And lastly, it gets me thinking about what a Sonic and Pokemon crossover might look like.

Are we imagining Sonic’s crew facing off against Pokemon? I can’t really picture Sonic choosing Shaymin just because it’s also a hedgehog; he’d probably go for Jolteon—considering it’s the sixth fastest Pokemon and perfectly matches his cool, energetic persona. Or maybe we’ll see something like “Knuckles as a Pokemon.” Who knows? Regardless, the trailer is a treat, offering more glimpses of the Chao-themed restaurant where Team Sonic hangs out, which, if you ask me, is the real highlight. But for those who enjoy a bit of drama, there’s also an emotional match cut of Shadow and Maria, which is sure to tug at your heartstrings—I’m guilty of getting misty-eyed over Sonic characters myself, so no judgment here.

Beyond the exciting trailers, there’s plenty more to look forward to. The film’s director, Jeff Fowler, hinted at a cameo revealing more characters who might join the franchise in future installments. While he didn’t name names, I’m betting on Big the Cat making an appearance.
