Creating a game based on a hugely popular intellectual property is not always a surefire recipe for success (I’m looking at you, Marvel’s Avengers and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League), but it does give the endeavor a significant leg up. That was certainly the case with Marvel Rivals. The sheer announcement of the game set off waves of excitement, and its beta tests have proven that it lives up to the hype in terms of gameplay. Now, with just over a week to go until its official release, Marvel Rivals has hit a major milestone: it’s gone gold.
Positioning itself as a challenger to titles like Deadlock and Overwatch 2, Marvel Rivals is shaping up to be one of the top multiplayer contenders of 2024. The game saw more than 50,000 players participate during its summer beta on Steam alone. The full version is likely to exceed that impressive number once it launches.
Currently ranked sixth on Steam’s list of most-wishlisted games, beaten only by the likes of Path of Exile 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds, Marvel Rivals is poised to welcome a massive influx of players when it officially lands next week. The recent announcement that the game has gone gold, coupled with reveals of fresh content and gameplay enhancements, places it in an excellent spot to leverage this momentum.
In today’s gaming world, the term ‘going gold’ might feel a bit old-fashioned, yet it still offers the ultimate assurance that there won’t be any last-minute delays and that everything is on track.
Even though the beta phase already stirred a lot of excitement, Marvel Rivals has been hard at work since then. It confirmed the addition of Moon Knight and Hawkeye to its free-to-unlock roster, rounding up the count to 28 heroes—which is quite remarkable for a new hero shooter out of the gate. The developers have also pledged to display all hero stats, with plans to later include pick and win rates, offering full gameplay transparency. Recently, three new maps have been unveiled: one in the depths of the symbiote world of Klyntar, another in the majestic Intergalactic Wakanda, and a third in a mysterious Hydra base.
With all these features, plus the fact that it’s entirely free-to-play, Marvel Rivals appears set to achieve staggering player numbers. The game is set to release on Friday, December 6, on both Steam and consoles.
