The quirky and highly anticipated game Baby Steps has been pushed back to a 2025 release on PlayStation 5, courtesy of Devolver Digital. Known for its unique and iconic games, the publisher made the announcement during its tongue-in-cheek event, the Delayed Awards, which humorously highlights postponed game releases. Among these upcoming titles, Baby Steps stands out for its distinct gameplay mechanics.
If you haven’t heard of Devolver Digital, you might recognize some of its popular titles like Hotline Miami, Wizard with a Gun, Enter the Gungeon, and Cult of the Lamb. The studio is known for its innovative approach to gaming and announced Baby Steps to eager fans in June 2023. However, enthusiasts will have to exercise a bit more patience as the release has been postponed.
In the recent Delayed Awards ceremony, Devolver Digital shared that Baby Steps, developed by a small team including the creator of Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, will now see the light of day in 2025. Players will guide an “unemployed failson” out of his comfort zone and into the vast world by realistically taking one step at a time. The game is designed with intentionally challenging controls that echo what players have experienced in hard-to-master games like Octodad, promising both frustration and hilarity. Though originally slated for 2024, the new release window promises fans more time to anticipate this unique adventure.
As detailed on Devolver Digital’s official site, Baby Steps is set to feature, among other things, “fully-simulated physics-based walking,” an adaptable soundtrack, and a freely explorable environment complete with peculiar additions like non-collectible hats and a bizarre “fully dynamic onesie soilage system.” A sneak peek at the gameplay reveals a protagonist that seems to not take himself too seriously, wonderfully fitting the style of other popular quirky simulators. Despite no explicit reason being divulged for the delay, excitement remains high as hopes build for a comically frustrating gaming experience come next year.
Devolver Digital has adeptly turned game delays into a source of amusement through its Delayed Awards, softening the disappointment for eagerly waiting fans.
