Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games have thrown their hats into the ring, committing to support Android XR by bringing some of their standout titles to the new Google platform. This fresh XR operating system is gearing up for its debut on Samsung’s ‘Project Moohan’ mixed reality headset, which is anticipated to hit the consumer market at some point in 2025. Unlike the fleeting Daydream, this version of Android isn’t just another attempt; it’s a fully-fledged adaptation for XR headsets, with capabilities that accommodate both traditional Android apps and immersive XR experiences.
Both Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games are well-established names in the XR world, and it seems they’re once again leaning into their early adopter strategy. These studios have historically shown robust support across all major VR platforms, so their move to embrace Android XR isn’t exactly shocking.
In respective announcements, Owlchemy Labs shared that their wildly entertaining VR game, Job Simulator, first launched in 2016, alongside its comedic sequel, Vacation Simulator from 2019, will make their way to Android XR. Meanwhile, Resolution Games announced that Demeo, their 2021 hit, will also join the lineup.
Samsung’s Project Moohan is drawing comparisons to the Apple Vision Pro due to its advanced hand and eye-tracking capabilities. However, much like the Quest, Project Moohan is expected to feature first-party motion controllers and PC VR streaming, creating something of a hybrid experience.
For both Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games, transferring their games to Android XR doesn’t seem particularly challenging. This is partly because Unity is offering day-one support for the platform, including seamless integration with the OpenXR standard, making the transition smoother.
Owlchemy Labs highlighted in their press release how developing for Android XR has been a straightforward affair. The platform’s synergy with Unity means most functionalities can be accessed directly through Unity APIs, eliminating the need for third-party plugins and allowing for a stress-free adaptation of their Unity-based games into the XR space.
Similarly, Resolution Games is on the same page. Their CTO, Johan Gästrin, emphasized the shared vision with Google, describing the tech giant’s move as a significant step in the XR landscape.
The games being ported offer excellent starting points for newcomers. Job Simulator delivers playful chaos, while Demeo offers a rich, cross-platform multiplayer board game experience that draws players in. However, the question remains whether other XR developers will leap onto the Android XR train at the same speed. Much of this will hinge on Project Moohan’s performance, with its price, specs, and launch date still under wraps, playing pivotal roles in its adoption.
