We’re holding out for the first glimpse of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, with a trailer release expected later this week. However, Gunn has already given us a taste by unveiling the film’s main theme.
There’s considerable pressure on Gunn at present. As the co-CEO of DC Studios, he’s steering the ship for the newly envisioned DC Universe (DCU), on which a lot is riding. Success could breathe new life into the brand’s cinematic endeavors, while failure might see DC letting go of its interlinked film universe dreams entirely. After all, there are only so many times you can hit the reset button, even if comic books suggest otherwise. Gunn, while busy with his animated series, Creature Commandos, which actually marks the debut project of this film universe, shared on his personal Twitter account that a teaser for the Superman film is set to premiere this Thursday. This is a significant step in introducing audiences to the live-action component of the new DCU.
For those eagerly awaiting Thursday, Gunn didn’t leave you hanging. He dropped a snippet of what sounds like the film’s main theme, accompanied by a short clip of David Corenswet’s Superman soaring skyward. It’s a beautiful piece that carries a mellow and nostalgic feel. You might even notice a familiar nod to the 1978 Superman film’s iconic score, originally crafted by the legendary John Williams.
The newly revealed theme is the work of composer John Murphy, whose impressive portfolio includes scores for movies like 28 Days Later, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and The Suicide Squad—Gunn’s previous directorial venture. Interestingly, this Superman film marks the third collaboration between Gunn and Murphy, having worked together on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 as well.
So, while Thursday promises a taste of what’s to come, remember you’ve still got some time before the film hits theaters, as Superman is scheduled for release on July 11 next year. I’m confident you’ll find a way to keep the excitement alive until then!
