‘Blade & Sorcery’ Studio Announces Development of New “Highly Moddable” VR Game

Blade & Sorcery has long held the crown as a beloved VR combat simulator, and in June 2024, it celebrated the milestone of its big 1.0 release. While that might mark the end of its active development, the creators at Warpfrog are certainly not resting on their laurels. They’ve already got their sights set on a new project, promising it will be just as exciting and packed with features as their flagship physics-based combat game.

Though the specifics about their new venture are still under wraps, Warpfrog confirmed in a chat with Road to VR that it will indeed be another VR experience. Fans can expect the signature Warpfrog flair: physics-driven interactions and an immersive simulation experience. Most importantly, the new game will maintain the high modding potential that made Blade & Sorcery so popular.

Blade & Sorcery itself invites creativity, offering simple modding through manual tweaks or utilizing Nexus Mod Manager. This opens up a world of customization, from enhancing weapon effects with additional sparks to introducing user-generated maps and custom weapons, crafting entirely new gameplay experiences.

During a discussion with Meta in October, Warpfrog mentioned they are integrating a fresh framework into their upcoming game. This is a result of pushing their previous system to its limits during Blade & Sorcery’s extensive early access period.

“We need to untangle some spaghetti code and revamp things. Starting anew with a different engine is imperative. We’ve embarked on designing a new framework that will vastly enhance performance for our upcoming game. This time, it’s all about building a system tailored for a complete team effort. For the first time, we’re handling the game development process completely with a full team.”

Anticipation runs high for what Warpfrog will create next, especially since the once-solo endeavor led by developer ‘KospY’ has expanded into a team nearly 30 members strong.

The major 1.0 update, which introduced the ‘Crystal Hunt’ story mode, transformed Blade & Sorcery from a straightforward melee combat simulator into a full-fledged adventure game. It now includes intricate upgrade systems, a rich narrative, and a vastly expanded, interconnected world.

Reflecting on their journey and looking ahead, Warpfrog shared in a Steam news update, “This is just the beginning for us at Warpfrog. Over the past five years, we’ve learned a lot, and we’re thrilled to unveil what we’ve got coming next. Your ongoing support has enabled us to dream bigger and push to develop even more ambitious games.”
