It seems like we’re hearing about canceled games every other day, and the latest one facing the chopping block might be PlatinumGames’ Project G.G. This game, which bore a resemblance to Ultra Man, was shrouded in mystery from its very announcement.
Do you remember when Project G.G. was unveiled back in 2020? If it’s slipped your mind, you’re not alone. After its initial announcement, we didn’t hear much more about it. And then, to top it all off, Hideki Kamiya, the legendary director and co-founder of PlatinumGames, left the company at the end of 2023. Naturally, this departure sparked a wave of speculation about the fate of Project G.G. Now, it seems more likely than ever that this game will never see the light of day. When you look at the list of games PlatinumGames has worked on, there are only ten titles showcased, featuring well-known names like the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and the recently revealed Ninja Gaiden 4.
Interestingly, a dive into the Wayback Machine reveals that there were once 22 games listed on that page. This included licensed titles like Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and The Legend of Korra, as well as self-developed projects like Madworld and the infamous Babylon’s Fall. Although these games still have their dedicated pages, they no longer appear on the current list (hat-tip to Eurogamer for the heads-up). Project G.G. used to be among those entries, but now it doesn’t even have a standalone page anymore. Its URL merely redirects you to the main page of PlatinumGames.
These signs seem to seal the fate of Project G.G., marking it as a casualty. It’s not exactly a shocking revelation considering Kamiya’s absence from the company for over a year. Recently, the direction of PlatinumGames has been somewhat hazy, especially with noticeable departures from the team. However, the announcement of the new Ninja Gaiden game is a glimmer of hope, ensuring that PlatinumGames stays afloat for the time being.
