BioWare, the renowned video game developer, has seen a significant reduction in its workforce, now employing fewer than 100 people. This information comes from a recent Bloomberg report, which highlights a stark reduction from over 200 employees just two years ago.
Several factors have contributed to this drastic drop in staff numbers. Recently, the company announced layoffs as part of a strategic shift to focus on developing the next installment in the Mass Effect series. Among those affected by these changes were writer Trick Weekes and producer Jenn Cheverie, who played key roles in the studio.
An additional part of this transition involved temporarily assigning BioWare employees to other studios under the Electronic Arts umbrella. However, many of these team members believed that their reassignment was temporary, only to find out later that the changes were more permanent than expected.
BioWare’s general manager, Gary McKay, addressed these transitions by stating, “Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio.” He emphasized the studio’s talented workforce, explaining that efforts were made to place affected employees into fitting roles within other EA teams over the past few months.
