Nintendo remains confident that revealing the Nintendo Switch 2 hasn’t dented the sales of its trusty original portable home console.
Addressing a shareholder’s concerns, the company explained why it felt the need to adjust its full-year financial outlook. This adjustment included reducing both hardware and software sales predictions—1.5 million for devices and 10 million for games.
Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, elaborated on these changes, explaining, “Based on the third-quarter sales from October to December 2024, and our expectations moving forward, we altered the sales forecasts for Nintendo Switch. We also updated our financial forecast due to various factors, including a revised exchange rate—from 140 yen to 150 yen per U.S. dollar—by the end of the fiscal year.”
He continued by highlighting the impressive history of the Switch platform, “Switch sales have crossed 150 million units. It stands as a widely embraced platform. This year, we released numerous exciting new titles and built on our extensive library of classic games. Plus, with over 100 million annual users, we began the year with high aspirations.”
Furukawa also shared insights into the recent holiday season, “Despite strong performances from new releases like Super Mario Party Jamboree across all regions, and the success of hardware bundles featuring hits like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we didn’t quite hit our initial targets.”
Addressing potential impacts from the anticipated Switch 2, he remarked, “While there might have been some hesitation due to the impending launch of the Switch 2, globally, many consumers were still acquiring Nintendo Switch systems—both as replacements and additions.”
For those wondering about software trends, Furukawa noted, “Sales are down compared to last year, but we believe that many consumers are still interested, especially since these games will be compatible with the Switch 2. The absence of a singular standout title like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom from last year has also influenced our software sales expectations.”
Fans eager to learn about Nintendo’s upcoming console should keep an eye on the Nintendo Direct. The Nintendo Switch 2 presentation is scheduled for 6 am PT / 9 am ET / 2 pm BST / 3 pm CEST on Wednesday, April 2.
As for the global launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, 2025 is the year to watch, though the exact date hasn’t been pinned down just yet. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates!
