Onward, the tactical military-simulation shooter crafted by Downpour Interactive, a studio under Meta’s wing, is on the verge of receiving a substantial 2.0 update. This eagerly anticipated update has been in the pipeline for quite a while, with the most recent major overhaul landing nearly a year ago.
Fears of the game being left in the dust can be set aside. Despite a rather light update schedule following the significant ‘Mercenary’ update released back in February 2024, which introduced a PVE mode and a variety of graphical enhancements, the studio hasn’t lost its touch.
Now, Downpour Interactive is rolling up its sleeves for the 2.0 update of Onward. According to a recent Meta blog post, this update, arriving later this year, promises to be the “biggest update ever” for the game, featuring a wealth of new content.
Players can look forward to a sweeping graphical overhaul, which will spruce up the weapons and utilities. Moreover, the introduction of a new Operator system brings 20 fresh characters to the fold, alongside new map content to explore. While more details about the 2.0 update are expected to surface shortly, the community is already bubbling with excitement.
This comes amidst some rocky times for the gaming industry at large, notably with several layoffs at Downpour Interactive in 2023. Adding to the shake-up, the studio’s founder and CEO, Dante Buckley, who began the studio’s journey in 2015, stepped away just before the layoffs occurred.
Onward first made its debut on Steam in Early Access in 2016 and later found its way onto the original Oculus Quest in 2020. It’s recognized for its intense emphasis on realistic squad-based tactics and an unwavering dedication to authentic weaponry.
For those curious about Onward, it’s available through the Horizon Store for Quest 2 and up, as well as on Steam for PC VR headsets. Its regular price tag is set at $25, beckoning both new and returning players to dive into its immersive gameplay.
