Great news for fans of both anime and immersive gaming! Pixelity, a game development studio based in Korea, has embarked on an exciting new project: an extended reality (XR) game inspired by the iconic ’90s anime series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Officially licensed by Japan’s Studio Khara, this game aims to deliver an engaging experience grounded in the original 26 episodes of the anime, rolled out in three distinct parts. The team is deep in production on the first segment, eyeing its release for 2026.
For those already passionate about Evangelion, the significance of this news can’t be overstated. The series was a trailblazer, vastly boosting anime’s popularity in Japan during the ’90s and leaving its mark on countless productions that followed.
Set in the not-so-distant future of 2015, the narrative introduces us to Shinji Ikari. Chosen to pilot the Evangelion, he stands as the key defender against the mysterious entities known as Angels, who are waging an assault on the high-tech haven of Tokyo-3. As of now, Pixelity hasn’t disclosed the specific platforms for the game. However, they promise a rich XR journey where players dive into the storyline and settings of Neon Genesis Evangelion, tackling missions and engaging in thrilling combats.
Pixelity shares that their game will spotlight collaborative gameplay, letting players engage with beloved characters from the Evangelion universe. This feature is likely to resonate with the franchise’s dedicated fanbase. The studio, with roots reaching back to 2017, is known for crafting VR escapades such as Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). Currently, they also have two more VR games in development: The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
While this isn’t Evangelion’s first foray into virtual reality, it marks the inaugural at-home gaming experience for the series. Previously, in 2017, the VR studio Project i Can, with backing from Bandai Namco, offered fans the chance to dive into Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls. This multiplayer game was temporarily available at the VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan.
With such an experienced studio at the helm, expectations are high for this homage to a classic anime legend.
