Sony has finally addressed the lawsuit brought by Christopher Barrett, a former Bungie employee.
In its official response, reported by Game File, Sony shared text messages exchanged between Barrett and some female Bungie employees. Sony asserts these messages reveal a troubling pattern of misconduct on Barrett’s part.
Barrett departed from Bungie in March 2024, a decision later attributed to accusations of inappropriate behavior towards female colleagues. He has since initiated a lawsuit claiming wrongful termination, seeking $200 million in damages. Barrett argues his departure deprived him of $45 million he was due to receive following Sony’s acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
Sony’s response offers further insight, stating Barrett was dismissed for allegedly targeting a junior female employee with whom he had no direct working relationship. The allegations suggest he began with friendly exchanges, which escalated to inappropriate comments about her appearance and romantic interest, ultimately fostering an unprofessional level of intimacy.
Sony also included excerpts from messages Barrett allegedly sent to his supposed victims.
In reaction to Sony’s legal filing, Barrett’s legal team told Game File, “Sony continues to selectively present text messages and conversations, making unfounded statements to justify Christopher’s termination and avoid honoring his employment agreements.”
Barrett’s lawyers added, “It’s notable that Sony hasn’t provided the complete messages or the full context of these conversations. Their response lacks any legitimate legal or factual grounds to terminate Christopher for cause.”
Christopher remains confident that once all evidence is reviewed, it will become clear that Sony orchestrated this to strip him of his position and the equity he earned from his 25 years of dedicated service.
