He promised he’d be back, and true to his word, he’s returned. More than three decades after Terminator 2 took the big screen by storm, an indie developer has decided to bring a fresh twist to the experience with Terminator 2D: No Fate. This new offering is a side-scrolling action game inspired by James Cameron’s epic sequel.
When it comes to games based on films, opinions often vary, and these adaptations have become somewhat rare. However, one developer believes they have cracked the code with Terminator 2D: No Fate. This retro-inspired side-scroller aims to faithfully capture the spirit of the 1991 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic.
Bitmap Bureau, the developer behind this project, describes the game as “A love letter to 80s/90s arcade games and we feel like it’s the T2 game we should have had back in our youth.” Based on the footage so far, they might just be right.
This isn’t to downplay our appreciation for the various other Terminator 2 games that have been released over the years. Who can forget the countless hours lost to Bethesda’s original The Terminator? Still, many of the official T2 games felt somewhat like skipping through the movie at double speed.
Bitmap Bureau’s approach is different. They’ve gone the extra mile to recreate the entirety of the film’s thrilling moments. The game meshes the look and feel of a 90s arcade game with the processing power modern PCs offer — and that iconic truck chase? It’s absolutely riveting.
One fascinating aspect is the promise of multiple endings. The original movie had two different conclusions depending on which version you watched. Personally, I’m rooting for a scenario where John Connor ends up in the molten iron, creating a paradox that could unravel the universe.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to hang tight, as Terminator 2D: No Fate is slated for release on September 5th. If you’re itching for something to tide you over, consider checking out some top-notch robot games or exploring other indie gems.
