In recent years, DC has somewhat carved out a niche as the darker of the two comic book powerhouses, largely due to Christopher Nolan’s gritty Dark Knight trilogy and the intense, somber tone of Zack Snyder’s film universe. However, let’s not forget about the lively array of characters DC has in their repertoire, with many of them being classic superheroes who embody ideals like truth, justice, and a hopeful future. But, if you look at NetherRealm’s Injustice series, you’ll notice it tends to steer clear of that brighter side of the DC universe.
In this alternate storyline, Superman, in a momentary lapse of control, accidentally kills Lois Lane, which pushes him over the edge, leading him to form a regime of super-powered rulers. As expected from NetherRealm, the series delves into some pretty grim themes, peppered with plenty of shocking character deaths. If NetherRealm were ever to take on a Marvel fighting game, there’s every chance it could go just as dark—maybe even darker.
Moving on to the Marvel Universe, it certainly isn’t lacking in truly malevolent villains. Sure, Batman’s adversaries are often praised for being some of the vilest in the comic book world. The Joker, for instance, is seen as a psychopathic menace. But Marvel has its own roster of villains that could rival, if not surpass, his infamy.
Take Red Skull, a one-time ally of Hitler and leader of Hydra. Or Baron Zemo, who formed the Masters of Evil and was responsible for killing Captain America’s son. Then there’s Ultron, whose mission is to annihilate humanity, and Doctor Doom, who reached godhood and dismantled Reed Richards’ family. And that’s just brushing the surface of Marvel’s extensive lineup of long-established villains.
Let’s not forget The Maker—a more recent yet equally nasty villain—comes from the Ultimate Universe’s Reed Richards, having turned evil and trying to reshape a universe devoid of superheroes. Just imagine NetherRealm picking from any of these formidable villains, setting the stage for a gripping and spine-chilling antagonist to drive their game’s narrative.
A potential NetherRealm Marvel game could also let Marvel’s heroes exhibit a level of intensity that fans might not be used to. The MCU has sprinkled in some darker moments here and there, but there’s a whole host of comic book heroes who don’t hold back in their fights, often leaving their foes bloodied and battered.
Think about characters like The Punisher, Wolverine, Daredevil, and even a less restrained Spider-Man—each capable of delivering ruthless takedowns. While any game would, of course, have its boundaries—with a T-Rating to adhere to and Marvel likely shying away from anything too extreme—there’s still ample room for NetherRealm to craft a thrillingly dark storyline much like the beloved Injustice series.
