French gaming heavyweight Ubisoft is reportedly in the process of creating a battle royale game designed to compete with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this new project, known internally as Scout, appears to draw heavy inspiration from Respawn and EA’s successful game. At one point, its artwork was mistakenly used as a thumbnail, highlighting its similarities. There are even whispers about characters that bear a strong resemblance to those in Apex Legends. Ubisoft has been quietly developing this game for a while now.
The underlying strategy seems to be Ubisoft’s belief that it can lure players away from Apex Legends, especially given the dip in revenue that Electronic Arts recently acknowledged. “The goal is likely to exploit the waning player numbers from Apex and take advantage of any opening in the market for another hero-based battle royale,” shared an insider.
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at breaking into the free-to-play battle royale scene. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, but unfortunately, it was discontinued just 18 months later. This news comes on the heels of the company’s decision to terminate its free-to-play shooter XDefiant by the end of 2024.
Interestingly, Apex Legends is also slated for a revamp, with a 2.0 version teased to be released sometime post-April 2026.
