Engadget has recently highlighted an exciting upcoming event from itch.io. The popular indie gaming platform is gearing up for its next Creator Day, set to take place on November 29. On this special occasion, every cent you spend on the site will head straight into the hands of the developers, as itch.io will waive its usual 10% revenue cut.
Timing couldn’t be better, as Creator Day lands right in the midst of itch.io’s annual Autumn Sale, running from November 27 to December 5. The community of developers that power itch.io has really outdone themselves this year, contributing a staggering 7,400 projects to the sale. What’s on offer? Well, a mix of both digital and physical games awaits, along with a treasure trove of assets for those who are keen to craft their own gaming experiences.
Launched in 2021, Creator Day was itch.io’s response to the financial challenges many developers faced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea was to give back to the community that supports them. As Spencer Hayes, itch.io’s director of business and content, explained to Polygon back in the day, “We’re backed by our awesome community every day and felt it was time to return the favor. It’s been a rough ride for a lot of folks, and we figured we’d chip in however we could.”
Even under normal circumstances, itch.io is already quite generous with its revenue model, setting it apart by only taking a 10% cut of sales. This arrangement outshines other big names in the industry like Steam, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Apple’s App Store. And with initiatives like Creator Day and various charity events, itch.io continues to carve out a niche as a truly developer-friendly platform, going above and beyond its more traditional competitors.
