An experienced analyst has put forward an interesting theory: if the Nintendo Switch 2 hits the market in the early months of 2025, it might just be outpaced by PS5 sales in the U.S. According to Mat Piscatella from Circana, we could see supply issues cropping up, mainly because of the anticipated high demand for Nintendo’s much-awaited next-generation console.
### Can PS5 Outperform Switch 2 Sales in the US if Supply Meets Demand?
Piscatella didn’t go into too much detail about why he believes the PS5 will outperform Switch 2 in its debut year, aside from pointing out the potential supply issues and a possible late 2025 release for Switch 2. It’s worth considering whether his prediction would hold up if Nintendo manages to avoid those hardware supply problems.
It’s certainly a daring forecast, especially given that the PS5 is already halfway through its lifecycle. However, the launch of GTA 6 could potentially trigger a huge spike in interest and sales for Sony’s console.
On the social platform Bluesky, Piscatella shared, “I foresee Nintendo’s next hardware device selling 4.3 million units in the US in 2025, assuming it launches in the first half of the year. That would represent roughly a third of all video game console hardware units sold that year (with PC Portables not included in the count). Whether these targets are met will depend largely on manufacturing capabilities and strategy. Nonetheless, I still anticipate that the PlayStation 5 will hold the top spot in terms of total hardware units sold in the US for the year.”
