Animal Company, a free-to-play early access game on the Quest platform, has consistently topped the charts for earnings, with the long-standing favorite Gorilla Tag trailing right behind it. This surge in popularity for the game, which draws inspiration from Lethal Company, shows no signs of slowing down.
Gorilla Tag, developed by Another Axiom, was the first title on Quest to surpass 100,000 user reviews, achieving this milestone last March. It remains one of the most prosperous games on the platform, leading in terms of both review count and revenue. Following in these successful footsteps, Wooster Games’ Animal Company has now hit that 100,000 user review mark as well. This game combines the arm-based movement mechanics of Gorilla Tag with the engaging action of Lethal Company, and it’s seen a rapid climb in user reviews, especially after the studio announced crossing 1 million monthly active users just last month.
A month ago, Animal Company had around 60,000 user reviews on the Horizon Store, whereas Gorilla Tag was sitting comfortably at slightly over 140,000. However, in just one month, Animal Company has gained over 108,000 reviews, while Gorilla Tag added only about 6,000 new reviews during that same time frame.
Independent data from VRDB highlights a notable uptick in user reviews for Animal Company starting in mid-March. This trend suggests that if Animal Company maintains its current growth trajectory, it may overtake Gorilla Tag as the Quest’s most popular game based on user reviews. Yet, various factors still need consideration.
Metrics like daily active users (DAU) and monthly active users (MAU) are crucial, which is why Gorilla Tag remains the platform’s favorite week after week, though Animal Company is rapidly catching up. However, translating this user growth into revenue is essential for sustained success. Wooster Games has not divulged specific financial figures since they enabled microtransactions last September, so it’s unclear how this success translates into actual earnings.
In a statement to Road to VR last month, Wooster Games mentioned that the introduction of in-app purchases had placed the studio in “a strong and healthy position.” The studio shared that since the launch of monetization in September, their revenue has consistently increased each month, more than doubling since December. They also noted a significant jump in their player base, which is now over 1 million monthly active users, a quadruple increase since December.
This surge occurs as the Quest platform experiences a demographic shift, largely due to Meta’s $300 mixed reality headset, the Quest 3S. Earlier this year, Meta acknowledged that the rise of free-to-play content and an influx of younger players have significantly boosted revenue from in-app purchases, like those found within Animal Company and Gorilla Tag.
The big question now is whether this growth momentum can convert into long-term engagement and revenue increases. We’re eagerly awaiting further revenue data from Wooster Games, which would provide a clearer picture of how top-performing titles on Quest are doing. If current trends are anything like Gorilla Tag’s numbers last June, Animal Company might already be generating substantial revenue in the millions.
