According to recent reports, Warner Bros. Games has decided to pull the plug on an upcoming Hogwarts Legacy expansion that was quietly in the works and anticipated for release sometime in 2025. This cancellation comes amidst a wave of similar moves affecting various projects across their studios, reflecting the financial difficulties the publisher is currently experiencing. Hogwarts Legacy’s DLC is just the latest victim in a string of cost-saving measures.
After the resounding success of Hogwarts Legacy, released in 2023 and setting the stage with its action-RPG flair, Warner Bros. Games had displayed a keen interest in enlarging the Wizarding World gaming universe. However, their ambitions seemed to have met with less-than-stellar outcomes. The most notable disappointment was Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which faded from prominence shortly after its launch in September 2024. This period also witnessed the lackluster receptions of titles like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus, painting a challenging picture for Warner Bros.’ gaming ventures. Consequently, the anticipated post-launch additions for Hogwarts Legacy have reportedly been shelved.
In March 2025, the leadership at Warner Bros.-Discovery decided to halt the development of the Hogwarts Legacy DLC during a company-wide restructuring at Avalanche Software. This decision was reportedly made after evaluating that the proposed content lacked the weight to justify the potential pricing. This also spelled the end for a planned “Definitive Edition,” which would have included the base game and the now-canceled DLC. Insiders say this expansion, developed in collaboration with Rocksteady Studios, would have revitalized some previously cut elements, focusing on a storyline connected to one of the game’s companions. On a brighter note, the creation of Hogwarts Legacy’s sequel is still underway at Avalanche Software.
The cancellation of the Hogwarts Legacy DLC is just one of several recent cost-cutting maneuvers by Warner Bros. Games. Earlier, in February 2025, the company axed the much-anticipated Wonder Woman game and closed the doors on three of its studios, including Monolith Productions, famed for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Such measures followed reported layoffs at Rocksteady Studios, driven by disappointing results from their live-service game, Suicide Squad. The restructuring reached the upper echelons too, with negotiations underway for the company president, David Haddad’s, planned departure later in the year.
While this news dampens the prospects for additional content for Hogwarts Legacy, it’s not all gloom for fans. The follow-up game is actively in the works, and Warner Bros. Games has reiterated its commitment to the fantasy-laden intellectual property, suggesting that the sequel is a significant focus in their future strategy.
