Warframe 1999 is just around the corner, and it’s getting fans of the live service shooter excited to return to its unique mix of dark tech fantasy with a nostalgic twist from the end-millennium era. Visually stunning, this new experience is complemented by a generous gift from Digital Extremes: they are offering Dark Sector, their first game and precursor to Warframe, completely free on Steam.
If you’ve been following Warframe closely, you might already know about this. However, many gamers probably haven’t heard of Dark Sector, which launched back in 2009 on PC after its console debut. As a gritty single-player third-person shooter, it puts you in the role of Hayden Tenno, a CIA agent on a mission in a fictional Soviet state at the Cold War’s close. The game combines classic third-person shooting mechanics with an intriguing weapon: the Glaive, a lethal, boomerang-like tool essential for combat and puzzle-solving. It also goes for a raw, immersive feel by excluding a HUD.
Though not widely recognized as a classic, Dark Sector holds a crucial place in gaming history as Warframe’s predecessor. The Tennos in Warframe borrow their name from the game’s main character, and initially, Dark Sector was designed to be a larger-scale online experience. Due to its challenging development, however, those plans shifted. Much of the concept and lore was later integrated into Warframe, leading to what fans know and love today. The forthcoming 1999 expansion draws heavily from Dark Sector, with some fans speculating that Hayden Tenno himself might make an appearance.
As the excitement builds, Digital Extremes is giving gamers the chance to secure a piece of their history by offering Dark Sector for free on Steam. In their announcement, they encourage players to “pick up and play this piece of Digital Extremes history and fight back against the Technocyte Virus as Hayden Tenno!” But don’t delay; this offer won’t last forever.
You can snag Dark Sector on Steam right away, but this freebie wraps up on Saturday, November 30 at 9am PT, 12pm ET, 5pm GMT, 6pm CET. So, make sure to claim your copy before it’s too late.
