Portia Maye, before taking on the mantle of The Houndmaster, led a life destined for adventure, nurtured by her father’s love as they sailed the vast oceans. Her journey took a dark turn when the fearsome pirate Mad Molak raided her father’s ship, Nightsdream. With most of the crew mercilessly slaughtered, Portia was spared, kept alive for her skills as a navigator.
Driven by a burning desire for vengeance, Portia seized an opportunity for retaliation. She intentionally wrecked the ship on Dragon’s Tooth, dooming her captors to the depths. Remarkably, she survived this ordeal, only to find companionship in a loyal puppy named Snug.
Portia once epitomized the ultimate survivor, enduring both the Nightsdream massacre and years stranded on Dragon’s Tooth. However, revenge consumed her, deepening her bloodlust over time. Unbeknownst to her, Dragon’s Tooth was a Bleed, a mysterious convergence of worlds.
"As Jessi Thind, our Lead Narrative Director, explains, ‘Bleeds can drive you mad if they don’t outright kill you.’”
Her descent into madness mirrored her growing prowess with violence, crafting a Killer more fearsome than Molak. By the time she executed her revenge, her place in The Entity’s world was already assured.
Her last tether to humanity remained with Snug, her devoted protector. This bond is explored in The Houndmaster’s Power, leveraging Snug’s uncanny ability to track and pin down Survivors.
For The Black Talon
As a child of the shadowy Black Talon – a faction of the ominous Black Vale – Taurie Cain aspired to uncover the mysteries of The Entity. Her path took a tragic turn when her parents vanished into a Bleed, seeking secrets on behalf of their cause. Taurie followed, managing to avert complete disaster.
Devoted to the dark cause, Taurie climbed swiftly within the Black Talon, faced with difficult decisions and drawn ever further into the abyss. Her path overlapped with figures from both myth and opposition, like survivors Haddie Kaur and Elodie Rakoto. Yet, Taurie sought darkness, believing it held the key to transcendence.
"Growing up like she did, Taurie thinks her mission serves humanity," says Thind. "Even as shadows deepened, she kept going until reaching an irreversible juncture.”
Soon, she faced a decision she never thought possible. Ordered to sacrifice Jordan Rois, Haddie Kaur’s stepbrother and a thorn in her side, the hesitation overcame her. That hesitation preceded her entry into The Fog, a place where reality revealed itself in a twisted cycle of torment.
Despite a truth that would devastate others, Taurie’s resolve remained unbroken, determined to fulfill her destiny. Her unwavering faith in The Vale’s grand plan may still serve her well within The Fog, as she believes each step brings her closer to The Entity’s recognition, her potential as a Killer not yet realized.
"It’s curious why The Entity drew Taurie as a Survivor,” Thind muses. "It thrives on emotion — perhaps sensing a benefit in Taurie’s presence, naturally fostering conflict among Survivors."
Caught amidst hostility and doubt, Taurie adapts to survive. Her Perks are crafted for seizing opportunities, drawing the Killer’s attention, and countering pain to her advantage.
Both Portia and Taurie encountered the Bleed, yet only one emerged relatively unscathed. Under different stars, perhaps their roles would be reversed. But certain paths once chosen are unyielding, especially those obscured by The Fog.
