Let’s dive into one of the standout additions to Days Gone Remastered: the Horde Assault mode, a thrilling survival arcade adventure. Before we delve into the specifics, be sure to catch the trailer for an exhilarating glimpse into this new mode.
What exactly is Horde Assault mode?
Think of Horde Assault as a novel gameplay challenge that pushes your survival skills to the edge. Your task is to rack up high scores while fending off massive hordes, Breakers, Reachers, and even the fearsome Rager bears. This mode tests your endurance and adaptability, offering an ever-evolving battlefield where enemies become tougher the longer you withstand their onslaught. It’s a true testament to the game’s slogan, "This World Comes For You," blending the open-world thrill of Days Gone into an endlessly addictive format. So, prepare to take charge and show those Freakers who’s in control.
As you start off in the Cascade region, armed only with a sidearm, your initial mission is to hold off the Freakers and get to your trusty Drifter bike, your lifeline in the expansive landscape. Be on the lookout for Supply Boxes scattered across the map – these hold the key to powerful weapons and significantly boost your survival odds. With more than 20 weapons at your disposal, including a brand-new flamethrower (a perk not found in Story mode), your adventure is a dynamic one. Each playthrough resets the Supply Box contents, so every venture carries a unique challenge.
While engaged in this survival quest, you’ll need to keep an eye on your resources and tackle Side Jobs, which are mini-objectives that provide vital XP and resupply opportunities. Trust us, being cornered by a group of 800 Freakers with no ammo is a situation you want to avoid. Make it to the 30-minute mark, and you’ll face the Ultimate Horde—a never-ending challenge designed to truly test your mettle. We’ll let your own experience tell the rest of that story.
Survival is just the beginning
Climbing the in-game levels unlocks various rewards, featuring characters never before playable, along with new patch cosmetics and unique Injectors that greatly enhance your gameplay. If you’ve already played Days Gone, you know the value of Injectors for boosting skills. In Horde Assault, they take on an even bigger role by introducing game-altering modifiers. There are 24 unique Injectors: 12 boost your score at the cost of increased difficulty, while the other 12 make survival a bit easier with gameplay perks, though they might come with a score penalty.
While we don’t want to spoil all the surprises, here’s a little insight into what Injectors can do:
- Exploding Freakers: Once defeated, Freakers explode. This can be a strategic advantage as hordes grow larger.
- Wanted: Start with maximum heat. From the outset, survival becomes more challenging, testing only the strongest players.
As you progress through Horde Assault, the Reward path lets you unlock up to 35 levels, filled with noteworthy rewards including Injectors, character skins, and patch cosmetics. You’ll meet new characters joining the ranks, such as O’Brian, Lisa, and the popular Skizzo. Patches from the 2019 Challenges make a comeback too, purely as cosmetic enhancements for Deacon’s cut. Capture your adventures with style using the Enhanced Photo Mode, and show off your patched-up Deacon to friends. The patches even carry over to the story mode, with additional rewards in the Reputation Phase for hitting target scores in four distinct regions.
Horde Assault isn’t just an add-on; it’s end-game content available from the get-go when you start Days Gone Remastered. We do advise newcomers to familiarize themselves with the core game mechanics, but there’s no reason you can’t jump straight into the intense world of Days Gone’s infamous hordes. Expect around 10 extra hours of gameplay, layered over an already content-rich offering, ensuring a gripping experience.
