As we wrap up January, most of us are back in the groove post-holiday season. However, it’s worth glancing back one last time to see which games topped the charts in helping folks either dodge family gatherings or ease down their Christmas feasts. Unsurprisingly, Fortnite takes the crown yet again.
Ampere Analysis, a research firm mentioned by Chris Dring over on VGC, delved into the gaming stats from December 2024, and the results? Fortnite still reigns supreme. Its main competitor for the festive throne? None other than Call of Duty, that legendary shooter you’ve almost certainly encountered.
Specifically, on Christmas Day, Fortnite racked up an impressive 30 million hours of play. This translates to an average player spending around 2.3 hours immersed in the game’s universe—whether chasing that victory royale, grooving to Mariah Carey events, or exploring any of Fortnite’s myriad activities.
In comparison, Call of Duty titles collectively notched up 20 million hours on the same day. Black Ops 6 was anticipated to spearhead this surge, yet it didn’t quite hit the mark. Imagine it like trying to pull off a last-minute comeback in a heated Nuketown match. Close, but not quite there. Don’t worry—you’ll nail that 360 no-scope next time.
For Call of Duty itself, there’s little reason to grumble. Ampere’s insights reveal that Black Ops 6 was a standout during the holiday period, contributing to Call of Duty raking in 38 million active users in November 2024 alone.
This success also brought a stellar month for Xbox, bolstered by games like Indiana Jones’ latest escapade. In December, consumers spent a whopping $465 million on Microsoft games, positioning Microsoft as the top global publisher across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms for that month. EA followed closely behind, mainly buoyed by EA Sports FC, which thrived despite FC 25 not quite hitting last year’s heights.
