The voice actors who lend their talents to the French version of Apex Legends are in the spotlight after reportedly standing their ground against a particular contract clause. This clause would have seen their voices used to train AI, a move they decisively opposed.
Pascale Chemin, the voice behind Wraith in this popular battle royale game, took to Twitter to express concerns. She revealed that a gaming publisher — almost certainly pointing towards Electronic Arts — had introduced this controversial clause in their contracts. While neither the game nor the publisher was named outright, all indicators suggest it is indeed Apex Legends and EA at the center of this situation.
In a show of solidarity, 31 other voice actors involved in the project have joined Chemin in rejecting the agreement. They even penned a collective letter of refusal addressed to the publisher.
Chemin’s translated message, shared on ResetEra, emphasized the importance of unity in this matter: “If we don’t stand together now to ensure a clause protecting our voices is included in our contracts — not just for us, but for all video game dubbing studios — we’ll miss our chance, potentially broaching disaster.”
She further explained the dilemma they face, noting, “In today’s world, refusing work seems impractical. Many of us struggle to find opportunities, and financial pressures are mounting. While a paycheck is certainly appealing, we’re being asked to do more than just work. We’re being asked to hand over our expertise to help develop AI models that could potentially replace us. It’s a contradiction to everything we stand for. We’re essentially being asked to undermine ourselves, to support AI development that could threaten our futures.”
