Helldivers 2 has just introduced a new Major Order, and whether you’re still smarting from the last one or just realized you can finally jump in via Steam after a long hiatus, it’s worth your time to take note of what’s at stake and where it might lead you.
Previously, the freshly-updated Democracy Space Station came back into action as part of the fight against the Illuminate, but now, it’s time to head back to the bug front. Of course, if you’re a die-hard bugdiver, you might not have left that part of the battle even after the last order.
This latest Major Order might seem pretty standard at first glance. You’re tasked with collecting 22 million common samples from Erata Prime, 15 million rare ones from Gacrux, and securing Super Earth’s hold over Fenrir III, all within a roughly four-day window.
What’s intriguing are the potential outcomes of these tasks. You’re assisting in developing tech to tackle “The Gloom”—that odd spore cloud prevalent in Terminid-controlled areas. Apparently, it’s more than just a nuisance that requires foglights for your ship.
“MAJOR ORDER: The Illuminate campaign of terror continues unrestricted. Even the resurgent DSS, deployed with unassailable precision by the Helldivers, was not enough to repel the tide of xeno-autocracy… yet all is not gloom and doom, for recent scientific findings have…” reads a recent tweet from the official HELLDIVERSâ„¢ 2 account.
Arrowhead’s full briefing elaborates, mentioning that recent experiments on Terminids using collected Gloom spores indicate mutations that significantly boost the yield of Element 710—up to ten times, in fact. “The implications of this are monumental,” it states. “The Gloom may represent an untapped energy source, with possibilities that extend FTL travel beyond just military and colony operations to include trade and research sectors.”
This could mean new advancements for Super Earth’s arsenal beyond just the DSS. However, it’s anyone’s guess what else might happen. Will it create a bigger, more formidable adversary through unexpected Gloom mutations?
In the world of Helldivers 2, anything could unfold. As usual, time will tell, and it’s likely to be a bit of both adventure and chaos.
