Pokemon Go enthusiasts, there’s some exciting news on the horizon for the Unova Tour event.
The big announcement confirms that the iconic mascots from Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, namely “White Kyurem” and “Black Kyurem”, are making their first-ever appearance in Pokemon Go. This debut is set to coincide with the celebration of the fifth generation of Pokemon. Keep an eye out for these Ice/Dragon-type legendary creatures at special in-person events in Los Angeles and New Taipei City from February 21st to 23rd. A global release will follow soon after, spanning March 1st and 2nd.
To add these powerful Pokemon to your collection, trainers must take on Black and White Kyurem in high-difficulty raid battles. Success in these raids will earn you “Volt Fusion Energy” to transform into Black Kyurem or “Blaze Fusion Energy” for White Kyurem. If that rings a bell, it’s likely because a similar process was used during last summer’s Pokemon Go Fest to create “Dusk Mane Necrozma” and “Dawn Wings Necrozma.” For this fusion, you’ll need a Kyurem and either Zekrom or Reshiram. The Kyurem determines not only the stats but also the shiny status if applicable. Additionally, if the Kyurem knows the move Glaciate before merging, fusing with Zekrom will result in Black Kyurem acquiring “Freeze Shock,” and fusing with Reshiram will instead provide “Ice Burn.” We’re currently seeking clarification from Niantic to find out if Kyurem caught during the event will automatically come equipped with Glaciate for the fusion process. Though the fusion energy will be initially available during the on-ground events, trainers located elsewhere can still participate in the raids through remote play up to five times a day, although only local participants will receive the energy.
In a neat touch, the legendary captures could sport exclusive status screen backgrounds. Reshiram will have a theme linked to Pokemon Black, and Zekrom will reflect Pokemon White. Kyurem, interestingly, might come with either background. Fusing two Pokémon, each carrying a different background (say, a Zekrom with a Black-themed Kyurem), will result in a unique third background, adding an extra layer of personalization to your Pokémon roster.
