COLD VR, the eagerly awaited spiritual successor to the long-standing favorite, SUPERHOT VR from back in 2016, is gearing up for its release on Quest and PC VR headsets next month. Fans of the PlayStation VR 2 won’t have to wait much longer either, though, as its version is lined up for a subsequent launch.
SUPERHOT VR may have been around for a while, but it still holds its charm, prompting a question as to why more developers haven’t attempted to mimic its innovative time-stopping movement mechanics. But here comes Cold VR, taking a fresh twist on the concept. Instead of slowing down, the game’s twist has you moving faster. The bizarre catch? When you slow down your movements, time speeds up—including the enemies. Leaving lengthy pauses for too much thought can spell your doom.
The latest twist in this tale came with a new trailer announcement from developer ALLWARE, who has joined forces with publisher Perp Games. Together, they are aiming for a Quest and PC VR headset release date of January 21st, 2025. As for the PSVR 2 version, they’ve hinted at a release sometime later.
Beyond just clever time manipulation, the game ups the ante with stronger enemy AI and tricky environment hazards like deadly lasers, shifting platforms, and a slew of surprises waiting for the bold at heart, according to ALLWARE.
Carlos Alfonso, from ALLWARE, shared his excitement about the project: “Developing COLD VR has been an incredible journey. Partnering with Perp Games has been a pivotal experience—allowing us to introduce players to the unique challenge of making time itself a gameplay element. Their support has been crucial in expanding our reach, ensuring COLD VR will hit PSVR2 and Quest, surpassing what I thought possible. I’m beyond thrilled about sharing this with everyone!”
If you’re eager to dive in, Cold VR is already up for wishlisting on all major platforms. You’ll find it listed at $19.99, £14.99, or €19.99, and it’s accessible on the Horizon Store for Quest 2/3/Pro, on Steam for PC VR users, and on the PlayStation Store for PSVR 2 aficionados. So, get ready to experience a faster, fiercer take on time manipulation in gaming!
