Nintendo has just made an exciting announcement today about the upcoming console that will succeed the Switch, and it’s definitely something for gamers to look forward to.
During the company’s Corporate Management Policy briefing, which came right after they released their Q2 2024-25 financial results, Nintendo confirmed some big news. The next console in line after the Switch will offer “full support” for existing Switch software. In addition, the Nintendo Switch Online service will continue without interruption on the new device.
Nintendo Co Ltd took to Twitter to share this update, with Furukawa announcing, “At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well.” He also hinted that more details regarding the new console’s compatibility with Switch games will be shared later.
The big question on everyone’s mind is whether this support will mean digital backwards compatibility or if the new system will also allow play from physical Switch cartridges, similar to how the 3DS could play DS games. We’ll likely have to wait a bit longer to find out exactly how this will work.
