No Man’s Sky has climbed its way up to a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, a monumental leap from its rocky debut in 2016. This newfound status stands as a testament to the tireless efforts by Hello Games to turn things around with a series of updates that have consistently enriched the game.
Back when No Man’s Sky was first introduced in 2013, its ambitious procedurally generated universe captured the imaginations of gamers worldwide, quickly becoming one of the most eagerly awaited indie releases. Yet, the initial buzz was short-lived. When it launched three years later, the game fell short of expectations, garnering lackluster reviews and quickly losing its initial swarm of players. However, Hello Games crafted one of the most celebrated comebacks in gaming history, steadily rebuilding trust with its community by rolling out updates and new content over time. Recently, the game achieved yet another significant milestone.
Sean Murray, the founder of Hello Games, took to Twitter to share the exciting news: No Man’s Sky finally attained a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, more than eight years after its release. Extending his gratitude to the fans, Murray remarked, “You have no idea what this means to us.” At the time of writing, SteamDB reports that the game holds an impressive rating drawn from 326,122 user reviews, with 81.18% of them being positive. Beneath Murray’s tweet, fans celebrated the studio’s perseverance, with one user describing the game’s transformation as “the greatest redemption arc of all time.”
Over the years, No Man’s Sky has received waves of positive reviews and seen significant boosts in player engagement. Although it’s yet to recapture the peak player numbers from its launch, which hit 212,000 concurrents, the game has shown an impressive knack for maintaining a strong and loyal community. The most recent surge happened on July 22, with 54,951 players logged in at the same time, coinciding with the launch of the Worlds Part 1 Update. This commitment to community has earned Hello Games a nomination for Best Community Support at The Game Awards 2024.
Adventurers in No Man’s Sky recently embarked on new Expeditions, which introduce fresh challenges and rewards. These events usher new content into the game, slated to continue with the Aquarius Expedition, running up to February 5, 2025. Beyond No Man’s Sky, Hello Games is also hard at work on another ambitious project named Light No Fire.
