If you’ve ever fantasized about diving into No Man’s Sky and living the life of that one friend who’s obsessed with dinosaurs—and even managed to hit it off with Jennifer Aniston—today’s update is tailor-made for you. Hello Games has just rolled out the Relics update, giving you the chance to embark on a quest to collect enormous alien fossils.
This follows January’s substantial Worlds update, which dazzled players with “billions of new stars and planets,” adding massive gas giants and peculiar flying squid creatures that would think twice before you overfish them.
In a blog post and the accompanying video, the Relics update introduces space paleontology as its main attraction. Think of it like Ross Geller’s job from Friends, minus the angst, sandwich revenges, and iconic armadillo costumes. You’re now invited to navigate the cosmos in search of “hundreds of unique bones.” Piece these relics together in your museum to decipher what these ancient beings might have looked like. Can you creatively place hip bones where skulls should be and persuade the game’s amusing alien ensemble that they have an unfortunate lineage of breath-challenged technocrats named the Fartongueians? Who knows? It sounds like a fun experiment.
Let’s reconsider that, though. Watch out; the update also includes Reanimated Guardians, described as “hulking stone lifeforms [which] slumber by planetary fossil beds.” They’re on a mission to protect these sacred burial sites from explorers who can’t resist disturbing them. Picture more of a stone robot vibe rather than creatures with humorous facial features, thus debunking my earlier theory. Accompanying them are Living Stone Sentries and Colossal Stone Effigies. The latter are essentially dormant “monumental stone figures” that stand sentinel over relic worlds.
While exploring, you might encounter living fossils like Titanic Boneworms and “skeletal fauna” scattered across planets and purple star systems. Additionally, Space Stations house Fossil Collectors ready to trade your crafted fossil exhibits or exchange some of your bones for their diverse fossil assortment. And yes, you can even get creative in the kitchen with bones.
Don’t miss out on joining the Galactic Paleontology Society! The new expedition the Relics update introduces includes incredible rewards such as a sentient rock jetpack, the ability to morph your appearance into that of a sentient rock, and a skeletal animal companion to accompany you on your adventures.
