For fans of pinball and Dungeons & Dragons, there’s a new temptation on the horizon: an impressive, though pricey, pinball machine that’s sure to catch your eye.
I must admit, I have a soft spot for pinball machines. They’re a charming nod to days gone by, yet they’ve beautifully evolved, becoming ever more elaborate. I’ve always wanted one, mostly to enjoy playing without constantly emptying my pockets. However, the sticker shock on these machines is another story altogether, particularly when it comes to this freshly unveiled, official Dungeons & Dragons model. Created by Stern Pinball —they’re the big name in this game— this machine is nothing short of spectacular.
In collaboration with Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, this machine is a tribute to the timeless tabletop RPG’s 50th anniversary. Players are taken on a fantastic quest through the forgotten realms, battling legendary foes such as a fearsome red dragon, a gelatinous cube, a mimic, and iconic figures like Sammaster the lich, Xanathar the beholder, and an owlbear. You’ll also journey to famed locations like Arabel and Westgate in Faerûn. Adding to the immersive experience are familiar voices from names like Critical Role’s Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, Marisha Ray, and Luke Gygax, the son of the legendary Gary Gygax, one of D&D’s original creators.
But perhaps the most surprising member of the voice cast is Gerard Way. Yep, that Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance fame. The reason for his inclusion is anyone’s guess, but it’ll surely be a cool tidbit to share if you spring for this machine. And about that—a heads up on the price tag: it’s steep.
The Pro version starts at $7,000, while the Premium edition will set you back $9,700. However, the real jaw-dropper is the Limited Edition. Only 740 units will be made, each commanding a whopping $13,000. It’s undoubtedly a fabulous machine, but I think my wallet and I will sit this one out.
