The much-anticipated offroading game, Over the Hill, from the creators of Absolute Drift and Art of Rally, Funselektor, in collaboration with Strelka Games, took center stage with its first gameplay trailer debuting at the Triple-i Initiative indie showcase today.
Unveiled back in January, this upcoming release sees Funselektor merging their chic, minimalist art style—which has become a signature of their work—with a gameplay experience reminiscent of SnowRunner, minus the hassle of managing vehicle trailers. And just to clarify, when we say "trailers," we’re talking about the attach-to-the-back-of-your-car kind; Over the Hill is definitely up for creative twists in game trailers themselves.
Rest assured, as shown in the trailer—already amassing over 200,000 Steam wishlists despite not having a set release date—Over the Hill promises all the muddy escapades you crave. You can drag, pull, and winch yourself out of sticky situations, all without worrying about the steep maintenance costs of a real-world off-roader that’s a mess with mechanical issues.
Players can team up with up to three friends, journeying through diverse terrains in vintage off-road vehicles from the 1960s to the 1980s. These classic rides play into Funselektor’s nostalgic automotive theme, now set against landscapes that bring all four seasons and various weather conditions into play.
Visually, the studio sticks with a streamlined UI, with the mini-map echoing the look of those old Ordnance Survey maps your dad might frustratedly unfold on cross-country family trips. We got a good look at the game’s winching mechanics as well, which will certainly feel familiar to fans of SnowRunner—it’s a straightforward process of picking your anchor point and reeling yourself in.
On top of that, a glimpse at the vehicle customization options shows you’re able to tweak your ride to perfection for optimal mud-busting performance. Plus, a photo mode lets you capture the moment you crest a summit, or perhaps ungracefully tumble down it after a miscalculation. Either way, these moments are worth documenting.
