FuturLab has decided to halt VR support for PowerWash Simulator on the Quest platform due to financial challenges and the necessity of ensuring job stability. Earlier today, Kirsty Rigden, the CEO of FuturLab, made this announcement, clarifying that despite their passion for VR, the economics of the situation no longer justify continued support. The platform, it seems, costs more to maintain than it generates in revenue.
Rigden acknowledged the love and belief they have in VR, adding that this decision doesn’t rule out future involvement in VR projects. For now, though, the team working on the VR version has been reassigned to other undertakings within the company. This move, Rigden explained, was guided by the need to secure the jobs of their employees, making future official support a distant possibility.
Here’s the full statement from Rigden:
“I’m truly sorry to inform you that we’re discontinuing support for PowerWash Simulator VR. While we adore and believe in the VR medium, we can’t continue to support it at this time. We faced a tough choice: we have an exceptional and kind VR team dedicated to a platform that’s a financial strain, alongside vacant roles in other projects. Ultimately, we decided to reposition our talented VR team into those other roles. As much as I wish we could keep supporting PowerWash Simulator across every platform, I must prioritize the long-term job security of my team. I understand this is disappointing, but if you were in my shoes, I believe you’d make the same choice.”
Despite the pause on VR updates, the game continues to thrive on flat screen platforms with fresh content such as the Shrek DLC and the upcoming Wallace & Gromit Pack. Unfortunately, Quest users haven’t seen updates since June’s Alice’s Adventures Special Pack. Previously, the VR edition enjoyed updates including Muckingham Files 1 & 2, and partnerships with franchises like SpongeBob SquarePants and Back to the Future.
For those who enjoy PowerWash Simulator VR, rest assured that the game and its current DLC will remain accessible on the Meta Quest platform, as FuturLab doesn’t plan to remove them anytime soon.
