Rec Room offers a treasure trove of lively adventures where you can jump in with friends or even spontaneous companions. Its latest buzzworthy addition, ‘Run the Block,’ is making waves, taking inspiration from the Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio, which became a fan favorite around the year 2000.
‘Run the Block’, the newest multiplayer spectacle, launched on December 11th and has quickly captured the attention of over a million gamers. Much like Jet Set Radio, this free mini-game throws you into a race against up to nine other players, challenging you to masterfully navigate and parkour through a bustling cityscape.
Although it skips the iconic 2000s rollerblades, you’ll still find yourself sprinting, leaping, and grinding along vast rails that snake throughout the urban environment. Adding your unique graffiti tag in this artwork-laden city brings an extra touch of personal flair to the game.
Looking back at recent years, Rec Room hasn’t flooded the market with first-party games. The standout release before ‘Run the Block’ was a charming pet farming simulator called ‘My Little Monster.’ Moreover, Rec Room has been keen on introducing licensed content, partnering with household names like ‘Monster High’ for avatar packs and Bungie’s hit game, Destiny.
This year, Rec Room has been hard at work enriching its creator tools. These enhancements allow users to craft intricate worlds and create assets they can sell within the game’s thriving creator economy. Earlier this year, they also rolled out full-body avatars, significantly boosting the personalization options for players.
In November, the game expanded its reach by launching on the Nintendo Switch, adding to its already extensive list of compatible platforms, including PC VR, every Quest device, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
