From the creative minds over at Noodlecake and Hildring Studio comes “Sacre Bleu,” a thrilling action-platformer inspired by bullet-hell games, now available on the Nintendo Switch. So, what’s the buzz about? We’ve got it all in our review!
Set in 1650s France, “Sacre Bleu” immerses players in a world where the heroic musketeers have famously repelled a mercenary invasion. However, trouble brews when they are falsely accused, and it falls upon you to break free from prison, unmask the true culprit, and restore order before chaos ensues. As the last hope of the musketeers, you’ll be wielding a variety of skills and items to complete your daring mission. Whether you prefer a leisurely pace or are a speedrun enthusiast, this game promises a good time for all.
When you embark on this new adventure, you’ll navigate your character using the left analog stick, executing jumps with the B button and unleashing sword attacks with Y. The Steam Blaster, accessed with the A button, is your secret weapon, enabling you to demolish obstacles or propel yourself in the opposite direction. Mastery of this powerful tool is key to dodging attacks and reaching those seemingly impossible platforms. Keep in mind: you have a maximum of three consecutive uses, so aim wisely with that left stick. The R button allows you to grab foes, and from there, use your aim to hurl them as you see fit.
Charging your sword for a spin attack, available by holding Y, allows you to dish out heavy damage or break through barriers. Combine this with a mid-air Steam Blast for extra elevation and distance on your jumps. Once your gun is retrieved, the ZR button lets you shoot, prompting precise aim with the left stick before releasing to fire. Mind your ammo, though—every shot must count. Grenades can be thrown with the ZL button, and utilizing the right stick for camera control will provide the vantage needed for those tricky challenges.
Throughout each level, you’ll notice a timer running in the upper right corner, tracking your completion time. Sharpen your skills through trial and natural progression, finding optimal routes to improve your scores. Additionally, pulling off extended combos with diverse attacks rewards you with higher scores and time bonuses.
Navigating back to 1650s France, the musketeers need your help from false accusations threatening the realm’s peace. With varied pacing, both casual players and speedrunners are sure to find enjoyment here.
At the end of each level, check your rank on the leaderboard for some healthy competition. Accessible gameplay options enhance the experience, such as font selections ranging from Open Sans to Open Dyslexic, speed adjustments for convenience, and the ability to zoom for better visuals during tricky platforming. “Sacre Bleu” is rolling out on the Nintendo Switch at $14.99, with a limited-time 15% discount available if purchased before May 1st.
