Square Enix is making steady progress on the eagerly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, as confirmed by a company executive. The update comes as part of an announcement on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s development status. Although the game is still missing a specific release date, many anticipate that given Square Enix’s past patterns, we might see this final installment in the trilogy by 2027.
Work on this concluding chapter of the beloved Final Fantasy 7 remake series kicked off around June 2022. Once Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launched in February 2024, the team transitioned into full production mode for Part 3. Square Enix has since offered periodic insights into the progress of this next big RPG adventure.
Continuing the discourse, Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of the iconic series, along with game director Naoki Hamaguchi, gave some insights during a conversation with Famitsu, a leading Japanese media outlet. Hamaguchi explained that he is pleased with the current state of development, saying the project is “going very well.” He assured that, so far, the developers have not faced any substantial obstacles. However, he remained cautious about announcing a specific launch window for the upcoming game.
In the same conversation, Kitase confirmed that Part 3’s storyline was finalized in 2024, a detail Hamaguchi had originally disclosed back in November 2024. Reflecting on the project’s scope, Kitase expressed his satisfaction with the story’s conclusion, hoping that fans will appreciate the outcome, although he chose not to delve into extensive details.
If we consider the timeline, the development of the original Final Fantasy 7 Remake took about five years, discounting pre-production phases. Conversely, the second installment, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, was wrapped up faster, in about four years. This expedited timeline is largely attributed to Square Enix’s reuse of some FF7 Remake assets for Rebirth. However, global disruptions due to the pandemic in 2020 did slow things down a bit, which potentially elongated the Rebirth production timeline.
With these factors in mind, the completion of the trilogy could arrive as soon as 2027. Like its predecessors, there’s speculation that this concluding game may initially launch as a timed exclusive for PlayStation before widening its availability to PC and other potential platforms. Interestingly, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth became more accessible starting today, January 23, when it premiered on PC.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth continues the legacy of its predecessor, offering newcomers and seasoned gamers alike an opportunity to explore its standalone narrative. Featuring iconic characters like Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith, and Red XIII, players venture beyond the city of Midgar in pursuit of the mysterious and vengeful Sephiroth. The game is lauded for its cinematic storytelling, engaging combat, and expansive world, promising a thrilling experience whether you’re new to the series or a longtime fan.
