Star Wars Outlaws is rolling out its first story pack called Wild Card, and it’s now available for fans using Xbox Series X|S. This pack dives into the thrilling world of a high-stakes game of Kessel Sabacc. If you want to jump in, make sure you’ve wrapped up the Gunsmith quest and The High Roller quest for Lando Calrissian to access it.
The storyline kicks off with Kay Vess on a mission set by Governor Thorden of Toshara. Her goal? To crash an exclusive Kessel Sabacc game and walk away with a coveted prize. But there’s more beneath the surface—there’s an underground game that plays by its own rules. Given the invite-only nature of the game, Kay will have to rely heavily on her cunning charm to secure her spot at the table.
Now, the Kessel Sabacc table aboard the casino cruiser Morenia has its quirks. It’s larger than what you might find elsewhere in the galaxy, and the rules have been tweaked. Generally, the game involves matching blood and sand cards over three turns to make a winning hand. If you run out of chips to draw new cards, you’re out of luck.
Interestingly, the ever-prevalent shift tokens are off the table in this special edition of Kessel Sabacc. EY-E9, the Protocol Droid hosting the game and owner of Morenia, simply won’t allow them. With a focus on keeping the game fair, EY-E9 wants everyone to have an equal opportunity to win.
Cheating, however, still has its place—if you can get away with it, that is. You’ve got your classic tricks like magnetic dice or Lando Calrissian’s sneaky double draw, which lets you snag two cards at a time. Usually, Kay can rely on Nix to help keep an eye on other players, but this time, the environment is lively and crowded, making sneaking around tricky for Nix. Nevertheless, this clever accomplice has a fresh tactic: Nix can plant cards on opponents, hoping EY-E9 catches them “cheating” and kicks them out of the game.
What’s new here is that other players will also be packing their own cheats to outmaneuver the competition. It’ll be up to Kay to stay sharp, picking up on the telltale signs of cheating and quietly alerting EY-E9 to any devious behavior on the table.
Playing the Wild Card game means facing more opponents, as you’ll find yourself at a six-player table on the Morenia instead of the usual four. With EY-E9 narrating the proceedings and watching over the game, players need to strategize wisely to come out on top.
We touched base with Thibaut Machin from Ubisoft Paris for some insider tips. Machin emphasizes crucial strategies like the double draw technique, learned from Lando, allowing players to improve their hand while planting less desirable cards on rivals to bounce them from the game.
Players should also gather information by exploring the Morenia, which can reveal insights into how others cheat during the game. Machin points out that understanding these nuances could give you the upper hand.
A strong reputation with the syndicates on the Morenia could be Kay’s ticket to success. You can either ally with or betray these factions, but maintaining a good standing might make navigating the story pack smoother.
Lastly, patience is key. Machin advises against rushing into decisions. He suggests biding your time, observing the dynamics at the table, and only making moves when absolutely necessary.
