Disney has just unveiled a sneak peek of Stitch in their upcoming live-action adaptation of Lilo and Stitch, stirring up a mix of excitement and slight unease.
Recently, we saw a trailer for the live-action version of the beloved animated film How to Train Your Dragon, which seems to continue the trend of transforming animated classics into potentially lucrative live-action ventures. Now, Disney steps into the spotlight with a 30-second teaser. The clip amusingly features Stitch channeling his inner Godzilla, as he playfully topples sandcastles, including one cleverly shaped like the iconic Disney castle itself. Beyond this scene and a brief moment where a CGI character interacts with the release date text—mark that on your calendars for May 23, 2025—there isn’t much to glean. It’s a rather minimalist introduction, to say the least!
According to the official synopsis, the film doesn’t stray far from its source material. It centers on the connection between Lilo, an isolated young girl, and Stitch, the experimental alien who looks like a dog but is designed to wreak havoc. Chris Sanders, the original voice of Stitch, returns to bring the character to life, while directing duties fall to Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.
The cast is shaping up to be quite interesting. In the role of Lilo is newcomer Maia Kealoha, while Sydney Agudong, recognized from On My Block, will play her older sister, Nani. Zach Galifianakis takes on the role of Jumba, Billy Magnussen steps in as Pleakley, and Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso makes an appearance, possibly as the Grand Councilwoman, though her character hasn’t been officially announced.
With less than a year until the film’s release, a more comprehensive trailer is likely just around the corner. Meanwhile, Disney is poised to capture audience attention this holiday season with the release of Moana 2, hitting theaters this week.
