When it comes to launching a fantasy RPG these days, whether you’re a daring indie developer or part of a sprawling triple-A studio with a hefty budget, the challenge is immense. A game like Avowed may have given it a solid go, but if it left you wanting more, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon might be the solution. This game has spent a good two years in early access and is gearing up for a significant update ahead of its full release later this year. For anyone eager to dive in, the new Steam demo for Tainted Grail showcases all the recent changes.
For those not yet familiar, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a first-person RPG that might remind you of Skyrim and shares similarities with Obsidian’s Avowed. It’s been in early access for quite some time, which is not unusual for an independent studio attempting to craft a vast, intricate RPG. With the release of its substantial patch 0.9 today, the game is inching closer to its official debut.
This newest update brings a ton of fresh content, including what’s nearly the final version of the prologue and the entire first act, which the developer, Questline, estimates offers about 20 hours of gameplay. During this early segment of the journey, players can expect new bosses, NPCs, narrative elements, and loot.
In addition to these enhancements, several core RPG features have been introduced. You can now explore a romance system, capture moments with a photo mode, and engage in farming and housing activities. The character creation tool has been revamped, and you’ll find new additions to the soundtrack. Plus, the game now features brutal finisher moves and “mini cutscenes” for epic boss battles.
Further upgrades have been rolled out (take a deep breath) across combat balance, spellcasting, weather dynamics, lighting, UI design, attributes, skills, and the crafting system (exhale). It’s safe to say this update is quite hefty!
The timing is crucial, as this is reportedly the final major step toward Tainted Grail reaching version 1.0. Questline aims to officially launch the game in the second quarter of 2025, so look out for its release within the next few months.
You don’t have to wait until the full launch to experience Tainted Grail; you can dive into the early access version now and explore the available content. However, if you’re hesitant about investing money before version 1.0 is ready, you can take the newly improved RPG for a spin free of charge with the latest demo on Steam. Head over to the Steam page to find out more and get the demo.
