Overwatch 2 is gearing up for big changes as we look forward to Season 15. In the first Director’s Take of 2025 on Blizzard’s official site, fans got a glimpse of what’s to come, although full details will only be revealed in the February Spotlight live stream. It’s clear that some of these updates could significantly alter the game’s dynamics.
Players can anticipate new maps and hero debuts, but that’s not all. A mini-competitive 6v6 season is coming in the mid-season patch of Season 15—a feature that’s been heavily requested by fans. This indicates Team 4’s dedication to listening and reacting to its player base. Amongst all this excitement, something that would truly capture attention on February 12 would be the much-needed return of PvE content or possibly the launch of a full-fledged animated series for Overwatch.
While Blizzard has turned its main focus to PvP after the lukewarm reception of Overwatch 2 Season 6’s Invasion missions, it’s worth noting they haven’t completely shut down the idea of continuing the narrative. Even though some former developers speculated the story missions were scrapped, Team 4 has left room for potential developments. The PvE missions, once a centerpiece of Overwatch 2, aren’t necessarily a thing of the past forever.
Hints of the untold story were dropped by former Lead Narrative Designer Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie on their X account (formerly Twitter), stating, “I love the story we came up with for this, and I hope it gets told someday.” Additionally, Overwatch: Declassified – An Official History includes insights into where the story might head. If Blizzard were to announce the comeback of PvE missions, it would undoubtedly delight many fans.
Past discussions have also shed light on more PvE content being in the pipeline, particularly the Suravasa missions shown at BlizzCon 2019. In a chat with Kotaku, an ex-developer discussed the initial plans Blizzard had for releasing Overwatch 2’s campaign in “multiple content drops over several years.” Considering this was to break into three-mission releases every 18 months, aligning with these plans could suggest new missions might be on the horizon. If this cycle continues from the August 10, 2023 schedule, the next release might be due around March 2025.
Some have noted that the official link for Overwatch 2’s February Spotlight event announcement ends in “PVE,” sparking speculation, although it could just be a coincidence.
Meanwhile, if PvE isn’t in Blizzard’s current plans, there’s an option to translate Overwatch 2’s engaging storyline and characters into an animated series. Unlike Arcane from League of Legends, which wasn’t a financial smash, such an adaptation could expand the reach of Overwatch’s characters. With a proven track record in animation, as seen in short films like “Dragons” and “Zero Hour,” Blizzard could captivate both old fans and new audiences.
Even if Team 4 focuses on PvP for now, incorporating in-game hero stories or releasing more comics would be a welcome way to keep lore enthusiasts engaged. The potential to build on Overwatch’s narrative universe is substantial and offers a rich avenue for Blizzard to explore.
