Pokemon TCG Pocket is in an exciting phase with its latest Triumphant Light set shaking up the competitive landscape. New decks have found their way into the fray, thanks to potent cards like Arceus Ex, Irida, Sky Support Shaymin, and Leafeon Ex. These new additions have both transformed existing strategies and given rise to fresh archetypes. For example, Exeggutor Ex has seen a decrease in usage with Leafeon Ex gaining popularity, while Sudowoodo has become a staple for countering Arceus Ex in the latest fighting decks. Yet, amidst this ongoing evolution, some classic staples from the Genetic Apex era remain pivotal, and there’s a growing call for the next expansion not to overlook a specific fan-favorite request.
There are various enhancements that could significantly boost enjoyment in Pokemon TCG Pocket, ranging from minor quality-of-life improvements to overhauls in how Pack Points are obtained and managed. Fans have strong opinions about these changes, though not every suggestion is likely to be implemented. One notable absence since the Genetic Apex launch is the lack of full art or special rare versions of pivotal cards like Professor’s Research and Poke Ball, a situation fans hope will soon be remedied.
Professor’s Research stands out in Pokemon TCG Pocket for its ability to allow players to draw two cards, quite significant given the game’s typical 20-card deck. Similarly, Poke Ball is a near-ubiquitous card, found in most decks in singular or dual copies, due to its power of pulling a random basic Pokemon into play. Although these cards don’t single-handedly win games, their consistent presence makes them prime candidates for some artistic flair. With every set since Genetic Apex incorporating full art Trainer cards, it’s high time Professor’s Research and Poke Ball received similar treatment for their aesthetics. Currently, players can only enhance these cards by collecting multiples and adding a sparkly effect with Shinedust.
To introduce special versions of Professor’s Research, emulating the Pokemon TCG’s physical counterpart might be the way forward. This could involve featuring a different Pokemon Professor, influenced by the main game generation the expansion draws upon, and giving it the full art upgrade. Imagine a Gen 9 dedicated set showcasing a secret rare of Professor’s Research featuring Professor Sada or Turo, tailored to the chosen booster, Scarlet or Violet, respectively.
For the iconic Poke Ball, a shiny full art version akin to other full art Trainer cards could do the trick. While it would be interesting to incorporate various types of Poke Balls in the design, it may restrict future expansions should developers wish to introduce different Poke Ball types. Ultimately, since these changes are purely cosmetic and won’t impact gameplay, they might not take top priority. However, given the community’s ongoing requests, it would be a much-appreciated nod to fans to include spruced-up designs for both Professor’s Research and Poke Ball in the upcoming expansions.
