About a year back, I embarked on creating episodes for “3rd Party 64,” focusing specifically on the Army Men games available on the Nintendo 64. Around that same time, I was fascinated to stumble upon a Christmas-themed commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, which had been shared by The Video Game History Foundation.
This discovery led me to a conversation with Frank Cifaldi, the director at VGHF. He mentioned that they had recently acquired a collection from Michael Mendheim, the creative mind behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the end of our chat, my inbox was overflowing with documents related to the development of the Army Men series, and the scope of my project naturally expanded. Fast forward to late summer 2024, Frank extended an invitation to join The Video Game History Hour for an episode discussing Mendheim’s contributions to the gaming world, offering me even deeper insights into these games.
This latest episode of “3rd Party 64” includes clips from that interview along with the insights gathered from the documents provided by VGHF. Without the essential work of VGHF, delving into the Army Men games in such detail wouldn’t have been possible.
But that’s not all!
As I dug deeper, it became clear that I had unearthed more about Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes than could possibly fit into one video. This realization led to creating an additional video where I share nine intriguing, previously unknown facts about the game, sourced from my research. You can catch this second video on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
