A new VR headset is joining the scene, and this one even shares part of the name with Apple’s Vision Pro. Introducing the Vivo Vision from China’s Vivo, a brand mostly recognized for its reliable and affordable smartphones that have earned it a spot among the top five globally in terms of market share.
Today, at the Boao Forum for Asia hosted in Hainan Province, China, Vivo unveiled this intriguing venture into the world of XR tech with their debut device: Vivo Vision. The announcement aligns with Vivo’s broader ambitions, combining strides in robotics with advancements in XR. The company confidently describes Vivo Vision as a “significant milestone” in its exploration of mixed reality technology.
At the forum, Vivo provided a glimpse of its Vision headset, although many details remain under wraps. For now, enthusiasts can mostly speculate about its specs, operating system, global availability, and pricing. What was shown, however, is that Vivo seems to have drawn significant design inspiration from the Apple Vision Pro, showcasing a similar headstrap design, digital crown button, and a magnetically-tethered external battery.
Interestingly, while Vivo’s smartphones usually operate on modified Android systems—with Funtouch OS for the global market and Origin OS for China—there’s speculation they might apply a similar strategy with Google’s highly anticipated Android XR OS. This operating system is expected to be released alongside Samsung’s mixed reality initiative, known as ‘Project Moohan,’ slated for release later this year.
The rise of Vision Pro look-alikes from China is notable. An earlier spotlight-stealer came from Play for Dream, whose mixed reality headset wowed attendees at CES 2025. The device even impressed former Quest engineer Amanda Watson, who declared it “the best all-around HMD demo I saw on the floor today.”
With this unveiling, Vivo seems keen to make its mark in the XR realm, feeding into a growing trend of similar products trying to capture the essence of Apple’s flagship VR collaboration. However, users and tech enthusiasts alike are left to wonder about the full capabilities and impact of the Vivo Vision once it officially enters the market in 2025.
