If you’re familiar with the British Isles, you might not immediately think of Birmingham as a prime video game setting. But what if we dial it back to the 14th century and throw in a zombie apocalypse? Suddenly, it’s got potential. That’s precisely the angle God Save Birmingham is taking, and after watching about eight minutes of new gameplay footage, it’s quickly topped my list of anticipated zombie games.
Usually, I go for co-op zombie games with massive hordes and wild weaponry—think Call of Duty Zombies or Dead Island 2. So, titles like Killing Floor 3 and the much-too-quiet John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando have been high on my radar. But, God Save Birmingham just might have them beat.
This isn’t your typical co-op bash where you fight off zombies with an electrified bat or a portable turbine. From what I’ve previously seen and now watching the extended trailer on IGN, it’s got a real The Last of Us vibe, with its third-person stealth and impactful takedown animations. While it might not rival TLOU in narrative depth, in terms of zombie-slaying action, it hits the mark.
The game places a strong emphasis on interacting with your environment. You can move furniture to block doorways, turn ladders into makeshift bridges, or use chairs to reach high ledges. Everything, including you and the zombies, follows realistic, reactive physics, creating a fun, dynamic sandbox.
The trailer also delves into its survival mechanics, showcasing meters for hunger, thirst, fatigue, and panic. Managing these needs requires real-time actions—no instant replenishment here. Injury management is also realistic; a fall can slow you down with a painful leg injury. Plus, you can disassemble objects for materials and enjoy a comprehensive cooking system.
I think it looks fantastic, and the medieval backdrop is a fresh twist for a zombie survival game. While there’s no release date yet, early access seems to be on the horizon.
