In the latest update for Windows 11, Microsoft is set to enhance the way Task Manager measures CPU utilization, aligning it more closely with third-party tools.
Microsoft seems to have recognized that the performance metrics provided to users via Task Manager have lagged behind what many third-party applications offer. As a result, they’re rolling out an update with a fresh approach to calculating CPU usage, bringing it in line with methods used by more comprehensive tools. This means Task Manager is about to become a much more reliable resource.
Microsoft has shared in a statement, “We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.”
Although the specifics of how this update will modify CPU utilization calculations remain somewhat unclear, one thing is certain: the calculations will be uniform across all Task Manager pages—Processes, Performance, and Users. This consistency means that the values shown in Task Manager will more closely resemble those found in third-party platforms, eliminating discrepancies and ensuring built-in support for CPU monitoring. So rather than turning to third-party options like HWINFO, Task Manager itself could become the go-to tool once this update is live.
Interestingly, Microsoft is also offering a nod to those who prefer the current calculation method by introducing a new optional column named CPU Utility within the “Details” tab, ensuring backward compatibility is straightforward. Currently, these enhancements are part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360 as part of the 24H2 update, which will be rolled out incrementally. It’s encouraging to see Microsoft striving to elevate user experiences across the board.
